Stormwater Catchment Flood Modelling

Linked below are flood hazard maps for specific stormwater catchments in Rotorua city and the associated model reports. The hazard maps are intended to represent a very large event: a 1% AEP allowing for climate change to 2100 under the high emissions IPCC RCP8.5 scenario.

The flood hazard maps provide an indication of where flooding will need to be considered as a potential issue in relation to resource consent and building consent applications. However, the models were developed to inform infrastructure planning at a catchment, rather than property-specific level. Therefore, the resulting hazard maps are only broadly indicative of flooding. The models incorporate a range of assumptions and limitations. In most cases, the results have not been calibrated against actual events or peer reviewed. The models generally do not take into account buildings, structures or small obstructions that can alter flow paths, such as fences and kerbs. Drainage works that affect the flood hazard may also not be taken into account. Rotorua Lakes Council and its consultants accept no responsibility for the accuracy of the mapping or any decisions based on it.

Other sources of flood hazard information include: the regional councils, which carry out flood hazard research; and the lake level flooding maps in the Rotorua District Plan, which were developed using Bay of Plenty Regional Council high lake level projections.
