Council aims to work with food business owners and operators under the guidance of the Ministry for Primary Industries to protect the health and wellbeing of consumers.
The Food Act 2014 came into force on 1 March 2016 and takes a new approach to managing food safety:
Food premises closure
All Rotorua's food premises are registered under the Food Act 2014, and have an active Food Control Plan or National Programme.
Under the Act Council can close premises found to have conditions where food is likely to be exposed to contamination or become tainted or deteriorate.
A premise can only reopen once a Food Safety Officer is satisfied that;
- The premises is now clean and all identified maintenance issues have been addressed to their satisfaction
- That they have systems and can demonstrate these going forward to ensure compliance with the Act and their Food Control Plan, and
- Staff will give closer scrutiny of the premises going forward until satisfied that they maintain the premises in the appropriate cleanliness etc.
