Subject: LGOIMA request - disposal of tyres
I refer to your Official Information request of 4 February 2020 regarding disposal of tyres for the period 2000 to 31 March 2019, and provide the following response:
The cost RLC has incurred in dealing with the problem?
Disposal of tyres has always been the responsibility of tyre dealers and RLC has had no direct involvement in this. Although RLC collected tyres dumped in its jurisdiction, these were stored on the landfill site and freely given away to farmers or contractors looking to use the tyres for other use (eg: playground mats). The remaining tyres were continued to be stored at the landfill site. In 2016, Smart Environmental took over waste collection service in Rotorua. Smart Environment has ties with farmer groups and any dumped tyres are passed onto farmers for alternate use, although instances of tyre dumping have reduced and are now not very common. Based on our records, RLC has not incurred any costs for tyre disposal since 2000.
Tyre piles that RLC know of that are in RLC's jurisdiction ?
The only known tyre pile in our jurisdiction is at the landfill site. These are the tyres that were collected by RLC and could not be put to alternate use.
