Rotorua Lakes Council is encouraging motivated and community-minded young people to put themselves forward for the Rotorua Youth Council 2027.
Applications are now open for rangatahi aged 15 to 20 who are keen to represent the voices of young people, contribute to local decision-making, and grow their leadership skills.
Over the past three years, the Rotorua Youth Council has provided a platform for young people to engage with civic issues, develop confidence, and help shape initiatives that benefit the wider community.
Mayor Tania Tapsell, who began her own leadership journey as a Youth Councillor, says the programme continues to create meaningful opportunities for young people to have their say.
"We're proud to have this opportunity for Youth Councillors to share their ideas and influence local projects and decisions. As well as sharing their inspirational ideas with Council, they also gain valuable skills that will support them throughout their lives and careers" says Mayor Tapsell.
Throughout 2026, Youth Councillors contributed to a range of initiatives, including providing input into Council planning processes, progressing youth engagement initiatives, and supporting projects focused on wellbeing, connection, and belonging.
As part of the programme, members gained hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, public speaking, project planning, and community engagement.
Councillor Fisher Wang, a former Youth Councillor himself, says the programme helps young people turn their passion for community issues into positive action.
"Our young people care deeply about the future of Rotorua and bring fresh perspectives to the challenges and opportunities facing our district," says Councillor Wang.
"The Youth Council is a chance to build confidence, develop practical skills, and work alongside others who are committed to making a difference. It’s an experience that can have a lasting impact both personally and professionally."
Those selected for the 2027 Youth Council will have the opportunity learn about local government, advocate for the interests of local young people, and contribute to projects that help strengthen Rotorua's communities.
