Reporter had the following question following a tour of the upgraded [city] Wastewater Treatment Plant last week:
Wondering how much the capacity at the wastewater treatment plant has gone up as part of the recent upgrades?
Response
We provided the following information:
The upgrade increases the plant’s average daily normal treatment capacity from 20 million litres per day to 25 million litres per day.
During storm weather events, wastewater flows can temporarily increase significantly due to wet-weather inflows into the network. The upgraded plant has been designed to manage these short duration peak flows and will be able to treat up to 72 million litres per day as compared to the current plant’s capacity of 42 million litres during those events.
Additional temporary storage capacity has been added to help manage storm-related flows and to improve the plant’s resilience during heavy rainfall as well as minimising the risk of overflows of untreated effluent.
