4 June 2026: cable theft, geothermal bore failure
Media: Rotorua Daily Post
Topic: Water monitoring cable theft
Enquiry
Reporter followed up on theft of cables from stream monitoring system being installed at water supply pump shed at Rewarewa spring in Hamurana, seeking clarification about the monitoring system and the impact of the theft
Response
We provided the following information:
It is a stream flow monitoring system.
We extract water upstream from the Rewarewa spring to supply the Hamurana and Kaharoa communities. This stream flow monitoring site measures the residual (downstream) flow. How much water is remaining in the stream.
As the site wasn't operational the theft has had no impact.

Topic: Geothermal bore failure
Enquiry
Just wondering if I'm able to tee up an interview for tomorrows show please with someone from RLC who is an expert on this "geyser" on Tarewa Road?
I Would be looking to do the call around 7:45am tomorrow for a couple of minutes to pre record a chat, and just a general update on where things are at and what's to come with fixing it etc.
Response
We appreciate your interest but will decline on this occasion.
The bore was under control (ie no more “geyser”) by yesterday afternoon and contractors have already finished regrouting it.
