Council meeting preview
This year’s Youth Council has fulfilled its purpose of amplifying youth voices in local decision-making and fostering leadership and personal growth, according to a report for Council.
The 2024 Youth Council, Rotorua Lakes Council’s first youth council since 2016, will be presenting on their year to elected members at this Wednesday’s Council meeting. A report from officers will also be presented.
During the year Youth Councillors worked on four main projects: contributing to the Long-term Plan, addressing environmental and climate change issues, participating in inner city revitalisation efforts, and developing a youth engagement strategy.
Through their participation Youth Councillors developed skills in leadership, public speaking, project management and civic engagement, the officers’ report to Council says.
Recommendations for future Youth Councils include increasing the frequency of meetings and working groups to enable deeper involvement I projects and fostering stronger connections with elected members for mentorship.
