This is a vital project to protect the health of the lakes and natural environment.
The work underway to install pipework under Tarawera Road is 90% complete. We acknowledge that the current stage of work is a concern for some, resulting in protests at the worksite. To ensure we better understand mana whenua views, work on the pipe installation along Tarawera Road (opposite Rotokākahi) has been paused since Friday 30 August.
Daily conversations with iwi and mana whenua are taking place.
Our project webpage has been refreshed to simplify information and make it easier to understand. You can find the project background, latest updates, and frequently asked questions by visiting: www.rotorualakescouncil.nz/tarawerassupdates Traffic management and security remain on site during the pause. Please take care using the road corridor and expect delays of up to five minutes while Tarawera Road is reduced to one lane.
We support people’s right to peaceful protest, but ensuring the safety of contractors, the public, work sites, and the environment is our top priority. Most of the contractors and staff involved live in the rohe and are tasked with this work (alongside other mahi on our roading network) so we ask for mutual respect when at the site and while they go about their daily lives.
We will continue to work closely with our partners to take the steps needed to protect the lakes. We will provide further updates as soon as we can.
