A number of sections of the Sulphur Point walkway will be closed from Monday 19 February while five footbridges and boardwalks are replaced.
It is expected the work will take about six weeks to complete (weather permitting) and the bridges and walkways will be opened as each section is complete.
The new structures will use fibreglass components which will be more durable in the geothermal environment.
The full walkway will remain open but visitors will need to use alternate routes where the closure are in place. The first four structures are located on the Motutara Trail behind the Energy Events Centre, Museum and Blue Baths – in this section visitors can use Hatupatu Drive adjacent to the walkway where the closure points are.
The last structure is further along the walking track on the Te Arikiroa Trail parallel to the Carters Building along Te Ngae Road. Visitors to this area will need to continue on the footpath along Amohau Street/Te Ngae Road (State Highway 30A).
