Three waters network capital works update
News
Rotorua Lakes Council looks after water services across the district which includes water supplies, wastewater, stormwater and trade waste - we want to ensure Rotorua has safe drinking water and a healthy environment.
Here’s an update on several projects that are part of Council’s three waters Capital Investment Programme which was approved as part of the 2021-31 Long-Term Plan for delivery in Year 2 (2022/23 financial year).
$15m Government-funded flood detention dams for Eastside
Installation of two flood detention dams and a wetland in the upper Kaipakau Stream catchment (upstream of Morey Street) is progressing and will reduce the potential occurrence and extent of flooding in the area.
The dams will also provide extra capacity for stormwater runoff from future residential development and reduce the impact of climate change. The wetland will naturally treat stormwater runoff from the recently developed Wharenui Rise subdivision.
The project is being completed by MAP Projects and is expected to be finished early 2024.
New Reporoa water main protects community network
A new, larger water main will replace two existing mains in Reporoa, enabling more water to be pumped from the Deep Creek pump station to supply the rural community.
Located between Handcock Road and Reporoa Road, the upgrade was identified within the Long-term Plan process and highlighted for replacement due to the age, materials and recent burst history of the two mains.
Hickey Contractors are installing this new 355mm water main that will compensate for the conditions of the new Wharepapa water take consent which has reduced the amount of water able to be taken to supply Reporoa.
New water main provides firefighting water flow
Work is nearly finished to install a 355mm trunk water main between Old Quarry Road and Clayton Road. The new water main will be located through the back of Western Heights High School, along Steeles Lane and Clayton Road, to Fairy Springs Road.
The main will be a key vein to provide adequate flow into the Mangakakahi industrial area as well as improving firefighting pressure and flows.
This is an essential asset improvement project ensuring the sustainability and resilience of water supply from the Russell Crescent reservoir. The contract for the work was won by Goodrick Contracting through an open tender process and the project is expected to be finished by July.
