Since our notification about work starting to install a new crossing on Otonga Road by the Old Taupo Road shopping complex we’ve had an update from our contractors that there will be road closures while work takes place. This is for safety reasons due to the high volume of traffic that goes through the area and will also enable work to be finished sooner.
The road will be closed for through traffic between Old Taupo Road, SH5 and Jackson Street with the following indicative timings subject to change.
- 26 to 28 April - road open for traffic with contractors working on grass verge between 6am and 4pm;
- 1 to 5 May - road closed to enable works including electrical, island installation, hotmixing and linemarking;
- 8 to 10 May – potential road closures if there’s any delays in above works.
CLARIFICATION: We made a mistake regarding information about the type of crossing that is being installed. The crossing will be a “raised shared crossing” not a “courtesy crossing” as previously indicated. This means that those wishing to cross (including pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters users) will have right of way and traffic must stop.
CROSSING DETAILS: The design and location are based on examples from other cities where crossings and roundabouts work well together. This location was chosen as people are currently already crossing here and formalising the crossing creates a safer environment.
The raised crossing will have a gentle 6% slope to slow vehicles down with provision between the roundabout exit for two vehicles to stop and users to cross the road.
BUS SERVICES: The need for road closure during the work means people won’t be able to use the bus stops from the roundabout end of Old Taupo Road to Springfield Road. There will be a temporary stop at 45 Springfield Road.
As the Road Controlling Authority for Rotorua, Council is responsible for monitoring and responding to emerging road safety issues.
The installation of the crossing is part of Council’s minor safety improvements programme which aims to install traffic calming measures to reduce the risk to our community, and enable the neighbourhoods to be safe, enjoyable places for the people who live in them.
