From the Community and District Development Committee meeting
Prevention and early intervention the aim of community safety initiatives
Community safety initiatives implemented by Rotorua Lakes Council in partnership with the Police have focused on visibility, responsiveness and community reassurance, the Community and District Development Committee was told today.
That focus will remain as the partnership continues to develop and work continues on development of a longer-term community safety strategy.
The aim is prevention and early intervention, the committee was told in an update presented today.
Police are positive about the impact the initiatives are having, noting it is enabling earlier intervention and dissuading negative behaviours.
There has been positive feedback from the public about seeing police in the CBD and a community constable role dedicated to the wider CBD has been put in place with additional police support provided as required, the committee was told.
Committee chair, Deputy Mayor Sandra Kai Fong, said it appeared the initiatives were starting to help Council to deliver on its safer communities priority.

Final step for Significant Natural Areas plan change
The Committee has unanimously approved making District Plan Change 3 – Significant Natural Areas operative in the Rotorua District Plan.
This is the final step for Plan Change 3 which was publicly notified in 2019 following several months of consultation with landowners, iwi and other parties. The plan change aims to protect significant areas of indigenous vegetation and habitat for indigenous fauna and gives effect to Waikato and Bay of Plenty regional policy statements.
