Mayor Tapsell on what's coming up at next week's Council meeting
Mayor Tania Tapsell discusses matters coming up at next week's Council meeting, the first of 2023:
Council will be approving their responsibilities and remuneration at the next meeting on Wednesday (8 February).
This follows on from what has been a busy new induction process which also resulted in the setting of Council’s new priorities for the next three years – community, infrastructure, housing and economy.
“When it comes to our remuneration the total funding amount for Councillors is independently set by New Zealand’s Remuneration Authority, not Councils themselves. This is consistent with other elected members such as Members of Parliament. As Mayor I decide how to divide that remuneration between Councillors based on additional roles and responsibilities,” says Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell.
Rotorua Councillors will be on a base salary of $65,000 each. Those with additional leadership roles such as Chairpersons will receive a total of $97,500, which is 1.5 times the base rate to reflect their extra responsibilities. The Deputy Mayor will receive a total of $143,787.
Mayor Tapsell says, “we’re also confirming our roles and responsibilities which sets out in detail what the expectations are such as making decisions about direction, Council services, budgets and importantly making decisions for the development and overall benefit of our community.”
