Preparations for forecasted strong winds this evening
10 January 2023
Council staff and contractors are taking the usual precautions ahead of the arrival of ex-Cyclone Hale, expected to hit parts of the North Island this evening.
MetService has issued a strong wind warning for the Bay of Plenty this afternoon until 8pm tonight (Tuesday 10 January), with southeast winds expected to reach severe gale in places, gusting 120km/h.
Although there is no heavy rain warning in place for Rotorua this evening, contractors are checking that stormwater drains and culverts are clear of any blockages and ensuring that wastewater ponds can cope in case of excessive flow, and equipment is fully operational.
Staff and generators are on standby in case of power cuts to essential facilities caused by high winds or the potential for excessive rain and flooding.
Take extreme care on all roads throughout the district as strong winds could result in tree fall, damage to powerlines and debris on our roads.
To report any weather related issues please contact Council on 07 348 4199 (24/7). Keep an eye on MetService updates at www.metservice.com
Advice from Toi Te Ora Public Health - 48 hour no swim rule of thumb after heavy rain
It's best to avoid swimming in rivers, streams, beaches and harbour areas for at least 48 hours after heavy rain. There is likely to be contamination from rural and urban run-off in water ways after heavy rain. To avoid illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, skin infections or ear infections, follow the rule of thumb of no swimming for at least 48 hours after heavy rain.
