HEADS UP - Kuirau Park trial road closure in effect
12 December 2022
Gates have now been installed on a section of Kuirau Park to trial a six month road closure following repeated undesirable behaviour to the reserve earlier this year, which has been detrimental to the natural environment.
The closure impacts the road section that runs from the Tarewa Road entrance to the central Kuirau Park roundabout. Rocks have also been installed around the perimeter to prevent vehicles from accessing the reserve via the grass edging.
Council wants to preserve the recreational values and protect the natural environment of Kuirau Park, to ensure the reserve remains one of the premier geothermal attractions in Rotorua and a safe place for people to recreate.
Over the six month closure period, the reserve and environments will be monitored by staff, and council will be seeking feedback from the community, iwi and stakeholders regarding the trial closure to help inform next steps.
The community are invited to have their say about the trial road closure by submitting online feedback on rotorualakescouncil.nz/kuirauroadclosure or emailing feedback to info@rotorualc.nz.
