Rotorua Museum Project Update
The strengthening, restoration and redevelopment of Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa is a key element of Rotorua Lakes Council’s Vision 2030.
The Rotorua Museum project is one of the most complex structural engineering projects underway in New Zealand, combining geothermal, structural and heritage requirements.
There will be a Museum project update at Rotorua Library, Te Aka Mauri (1127 Haupapa Street) on Wednesday 28 September 2022 at 12.30pm.
Come and hear from project sponsor Stewart Brown (Rotorua Lakes Council, Arts, Culture & Mahi Toi Manager) and Aimee McGregor (Rotorua Lakes Council Programme Director – Community Wellbeing) as they update the community on what has happened so far and what is next.
Rotorua Museum closed to the public on 18 November 2016 following a rapid seismic risk assessment of the building after the Kaikoura earthquake.
As part of the seismic strengthening and restoration project, the opportunity will be taken to upgrade key amenities in the building to enhance functionality, accessibility and the overall visitor experience.
Once completed, the building will look almost exactly the same as it did before it closed. Where changes are visible, the direction from Heritage New Zealand is for any new design elements to be sympathetic to the heritage building but clearly differentiated from it.
The heritage of the Category 1 Bath House will be preserved and will continue to have valued purpose in the heart of our city for many generations to come
