Wastewater overflow – Chapman Place
Council was alerted to a small wastewater overflow on Chapman Place at 2.15pm this afternoon.
The overflow was due to a blockage in the sewer caused by tree roots that had grown into the pipe.
A small amount of wastewater has escaped the manhole and possibly entered the stormwater system leading into Waiowhero Stream.
By 3pm, the overflow had been stopped and the blockage cleared. The area around the manhole has been disinfected.
As a precaution, signage is in place at Waiowhero Stream advising people against contact with the water in case of contamination and council will be taking water samples to check for contamination.
The relevant authorities – Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Toi Te Ora Public Health – have been notified. Relevant iwi representatives have also been notified.
