Construction of new lakefront carpark well underway
Construction of the new lakefront carpark off Lake Road is now well underway.
Construction began in mid-February and since then it’s taken 50 truck and trailer loads to transport 1450 tonnes of aggregate to the site, with 700 tonnes still to arrive. Once the aggregate is onsite, rollers are being used to compact the material into the ground. This work makes up the first part of the base course of the new carpark.
Once all the aggregate is compacted, the site will then need to undergo preloading for a month. Preloading is where a large amount of earth is used to compress and stabilise the ground. This increases the ground's strength and reduces the risk of uneven settlement during and after construction. This is particularly important in this area of the lakefront reserve where the earth is especially soft.
Preload is expected to be in place from mid-April until mid-May. Once the preload period is completed and the ground has stabilised, the preload material is removed, and the underground services works will begin.
The new carpark is scheduled to be complete by August and will include 79 free, time limited, parking spaces, including four accessible parking spaces. Nine new bike racks will also be installed nearby.
This work is part of the Rotorua Lakefront Redevelopment project and you can learn more about this HERE.
