‘Your Choice – 2022 Representation Review’ hearings to be held on Tuesday
On Tuesday (19 October) hearings are being held for submitters who provided feedback on Council’s proposal for representation arrangements, as part of the ‘Your Choice – 2022 Representation Review’.
Council approved the initial proposal to go out for public consultation on 31 August 2021. Consultation commenced on 8 September 2021 and closed on 8 October 2021.
The initial proposal put forward consisted of:
- A Mayor elected at large
- 1 Māori Ward with 2 seats
- 1 General Ward with 4 seats
- 4 “at large” seats
- A Lakes Community Board consisting of 4 elected members with 1 appointed member
- A Rural Community Board consisting of 4 elected members with 1 appointed member
- There were no changes proposed to the existing boundaries of the Lakes Community Board and Rural Community Board areas.
Throughout the consultation period, 125 online submissions and 44 written submissions were received. Of the total 169 submissions received, 40 submitters indicated they would like to verbally present their feedback to the full Council and this will take place on Tuesday.
Following this, Council will then take all feedback into consideration and make a final decision on its representation arrangements for the 2022 election, adopting a final proposal in November 2021.
There will be opportunity for members of the public to make an objection or appeal that decision before the final proposal is sent to the Local Government Commission.
Due to Council’s current COVID-19 protocols, the hearings will be closed to the public (except for submitters and media). The public will be able to watch the hearings as they happen via livestream, and can access the recording of the hearings later in the day, both via Council’s YouTube channel HERE.
You can access the agenda for Tuesday’s hearings and the submissions received on Council’s website HERE.
