Topic: Gin Traps
Inquiry
We have received reports from a concerned local who found 'gin traps' while on a walk around the Green Lake in Rotorua.
The incident was reported to a Timberlands staff member and she said "Not long after this 4 people turned up in a vehicle and claimed ownership of the traps.. And "said" they would remove all the traps in the area. But who knows if this has happened."
- Has Council received any similar reports to this recently?
- Have the tracks been checked and any traps removed?
- How frequently does this kind of incident occur?
Response
Rotorua Daily Post was advised that Council was not aware of this incident.

Topic: Proposed Tarawera Great Walk
Inquiry
Could I please request some comment from RLC regarding the idea [of a Tarawera Great Walk]
- Does the council think it would be a positive addition to the region's tourism offering?
- Would the council support the idea with any funding or planning assistance?
- How would this add value to Rotorua as a destination?
Response
From Mayor Steve Chadwick:
Tarawera is a special place of environmental, cultural and historic significance and we support iwi's vision for the area.
Council has been aware of but not involved in plans to restore this unique natural area and consider its tourism potential.
Tarawera is a real jewel in Rotorua's crown and the birthplace of New Zealand tourism and a new great walk at Tarawera would be a good eco-tourism fit for our district. I look forward to the results of the feasibility study.
