Topic: Bruce Horne's new role
Inquiry
Rotorua Daily Post requested inforrmation about Bruce Horne's new role at the council. Given his profile, people would be interested to know what he's up to now.
- Are you able to let me know what his role is?
- how long he will be employed for?
- and any comment on why he was chosen for the role/the skills he brings etc.
Response
From Council's civil defence primary controller and infrastructure group manager Stavros Michael:
Bruce Horne is on a year-long contract with Rotorua Lakes Council to establish community civil defence hubs and review crime prevention initiatives. Both are areas where he has obvious expertise following his former role with the police.
Civil defence centres have historically been based in places like schools but as their primary responsibility is the care of students, the modern approach is establishing centres in the likes of churches, rest homes and at marae. We are working with groups and organisations to create these community hubs, the key parts of the work being to establish relationships and provide training.
The other part of Bruce's role is reviewing the work we've done to date around crime prevention and identifying where this can be enhanced further.
From Bruce Horne:
I'm enjoying the new role. In some respects the work is similar to what I was doing in the police but for a different agency and in a slightly different way.
I wanted to keep working in the Rotorua community so it's great this opportunity came up and working with some of the same people I had built relationships with over the years is a real bonus.
It's satisfying to be part of work that will be really meaningful and will make a difference for people.
