Project update: milestone for Aquatic Centre

An important milestone was reached this week for the 50m pool upgrade at Rotorua Aquatic Centre.

Despite some unpleasant weather conditions, contractors on site were able to install the Natare filtration system that will keep the water clean once the pool is finished.

The 6 tonne system which is pre-built inside a metal shipping container was craned into place in the plant room on Tuesday afternoon.

Other works currently underway on site include:

Digging trenches around the sides of the pool to accommodate the pipes that take the pool water to and from the new filter
Cutting concrete and excavating space to add the extra length to the pool
Installing new stainless steel gutters around the edges of the pool to deepen it
Installing footings for the new decking around the pool

Physical works for the redevelopment project began on Monday 14 September and are expected to take approximately 20 weeks.

Once complete, the upgraded pool will have an increased depth of 1.4 metres which will meet International Swimming Federations depth standards. It will also have a movable bulkhead which can be shifted to create two 25 metre pools.

The pool will also be more accessibility friendly with the installation of a PoolPod accessibility lift which automatically lowers swimmers straight into the pool.
