Post-flood Recovery - Update 16
7 May 2018
5.30pm
Building inspectors and welfare teams have completed their visits in Reporoa, Rerewhakaaitu, Ngongotahā, and Paradise Valley, which were affected by the severe weather on April 29th.
The latest update (as at 3:30pm) shows a total of 214 building inspections have been carried out in the district with 63 uninhabitable notices issued.
The Acting Primary Civil Defence Controller, Bruce Horne, and Recovery Manager, Andy Bell, say the primary focus remains the safety and welfare of the community.
The welfare of the people of Rotorua are at the centre of our thinking and everything we do. Although the immediate danger and response to the aftermath of the severe weather has past - our effort to support the community is on-going. It will take weeks, and for some people, months, to recover, Acting Primary Civil Defence Controller, Bruce Horne says.
Civil Defence Recovery Manager, Andy Bell, says the Emergency Operation Centre is currently in a transition phase.
We are now looking at moving from emergency response to recovering from the recent event. This means we will be reducing our communication output via social media and on the Council website as we move out of the emergency response phase to Recovery. We have also discontinued the media conferences at 2pm in the afternoon from today (7 May 2018), says Mr Bell.
What this means going forward?
- We have identified most of the affected communities but we expect further details to come to hand each day
- We are now looking at more personalised communications with communities to look at the long term support for those in need
- Some areas we have identified that need support include: - Ngongotahā, Reporoa, Rerewhakaaitu and Paradise Valley
