Post-flood recovery - update 12
5 May 2018
4.45pm
It's been a long week for a lot of Rotorua families who are only just starting to understand the extent of the work needed to return to clean up after last weekend's storm.
Building inspectors and welfare teams made their way around Tilsley and Holland Streets and Ngongotaha Road and emotions are running high for those who have been displaced after the floods.
As at 4.30pm today [5 May] inspectors had checked 96 houses with approximately 39 receiving insanitary notices.
Each check is taking approximately 15 - 30 minutes.
The teams will continue in town tomorrow with some personal heading to rural properties in the southern areas of Rotorua.
We are continuing to encourage residents who have been affected by the storm to make contact with Council to register. Even if help or advice isn't needed right now, it could be needed sometime in the future.
If people know of someone who has been affected or sees someone in their neighbourhood encourage them to contact Council on 07 348 4199 or 0800 020 001.
The Civil Defence container at Oakland Place in Ngongotaha will be open again from 9am tomorrow for anyone who needs advice or assistance or would like to register for Welfare assistance.
What you need to know:
- If you have been affected by last weekend's storm or know someone who has contact Council on 07 348 4199 or 0800 020 001 to register.
- If you get your drinking water from a bore and you had flooding at your property, treat it as potentially contaminated and boil the water. You can get your water tested at the Rotorua Lakes Council laboratory.
- Treat flood damaged items as potentially contaminated. Ensure you wash hands and clothes thoroughly after coming into contact with these items.
- If you are drying flood damaged items put them in a secure location in your back yard and away from the grass verge where it may look like a discarded item.
- Look after yourself and your family. This is a stressful time for many people and it's okay to ask for help. If you need support or advice, have feelings of stress or anxiety and need to talk to someone you can phone Healthline on 0800 611 116.
