Exclusive exhibition showcases Rotorua Museum's collection
The Object of the Portrait exhibition, exclusive to Rotorua Museum, brings together a wonderful selection of Māori portraits and taonga Māori (treasures) from Rotorua Museum's collection, as well as the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust Heritage Collection.
Showcasing more than 100 artworks and objects, this beautiful exhibition explores how artists, using the medium of ink or paint, have chosen to represent physical objects made of wood, stone or fibre and in doing so, it focuses on the act of artistic interpretation. What kind of choices have the artists made in relation to the person being pictured? Based on the evidence of the objects painted by the artists, how accurate, romantic, stylised, sympathetic or sentimentalised are the subjects?
The Object of the Portrait has been curated by Damian Skinner and will be on display at Rotorua Museum until 25 November 2012.
Adult entry to Rotorua Museum is $18. Entry is free for Rotorua residents with proof of residency.
