TATAU TATAU ARTICLE - HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Standing proudly on the corner of Hinemaru and Hinemoa Streets, The Arts Village has been showcasing and developing local artists since 2002. With a calendar brimming with events and classes, there is always plenty to see and do at The Arts Village and the main summer event is Art in the Park, on Sunday 21 February.

A firm favourite among artists and art lovers alike, Art in the Park is held in the Government Gardens with more than 70 creatives and artisans from around the Bay of Plenty selling crafts, artwork and handmade goods, as well as live music, free artmaking and plenty of kai.

Also featuring during summer are holiday programmes for tamariki, workshops and classes for adults, open studio space, outdoor performances, and a community art project.

So there is plenty to get involved with at the Arts Village during the coming months.

However, COVID-19 has put a strain on funding and the newly-formed Arts Village Supporters Club is a way to support this facility through regular giving to ensure ongoing opportunities for local artists to shine.

“The Arts Village is a non-profit community centre that works with a wide range of community partners, funders and the Rotorua Lakes Council through a partnership agreement,” explains Mary-Beth Acres, Arts Village director.

“While we’re grateful for our support from funders, we need to hit some big fundraising goals over the next 12 months to keep our mahi going. The Supporters Club offers a way for members of our community to become patrons through financial contributions. There are also a number of other great ways to show support through buying art, booking venue space, and volunteering time.

“We know that art, in all its forms, is hugely beneficial. The Arts Village aims to foster and inspire our community to not only create art and learn new skills, but also to be inspired and feel connected through art,” Mary-Beth says.

“The Supporters Club will ensure we can continue to provide a great venue and a wide variety of classes, exhibitions, talks, festivals, community projects, and cultural celebrations to help enrich the artistic fabric of Rotorua.”
