Contractors working on the 50m pool at Rotorua Aquatic Centre have reached a number of key milestones.
Most of the necessary infrastructure that keeps the pool running is now in place and the project is on track for completion early next year.
So far, completed work includes installation of the filtration plant and underground pipes, pressure testing and construction of the pool extension. The work to construct footings and framing for the new decking around the pool is also now well underway.
In the coming weeks contractors will be working on crucial stages of the project such as levelling the pool floor to prepare for the liner, installing the moveable bulkhead and finishing the decking which will surround the pool.
Once all work is complete in early 2021, the pool will be re-filled and thorough testing will take place to ensure the pool filtration, chemistry and temperature controls are working before the first swimmer can dive in.
Planning and design work continues for the upgrades to the rest of the Aquatic Centre, including improvements to the roof, fire safety system, ventilation and internal spaces.

Photo 1: This photo shows the new decking installed at the Kuirau Park end of the pool. Framing for the rest of the decking surround continues. The new decking will be installed all the way around the pool.
Photo 2: This is the Kuirau Park end of the pool with the decking extended further along back of wall with space for additional steps. A handrail will also be installed along the decking at this location.
Photo 3: This photo shows the piping for the pool water supply and return water in a trench at the changing room end of the pool. The narrow pipes take filtered water to the pool. The wider pipes take water from the gutters along the sides of the pool.
Photo 4: This photo shows the new Natare filter plant installed below ground level in the plant room. Piping from Photo 3 is connected to the Natare filter. The flat plate on upright black pipe is for pressure testing (to ensure there are no leaks).
Photo 5: The sand coloured area in this photo shows how the pool has been lengthened to allow installation of the new moveable bulkhead. The new Natare stainless guttering (seen covered in clear plastic) has been installed around the pool.
