Today (17 October), at 1:30pm thousands of people across the Bay of Plenty will be ducking under desks and doorways to practise their Drop, Cover and Hold. This is the 3rd time the national drill has been held in Bay of Plenty.
Given New Zealand’s history of earthquakes, this drill is incredibly important says Director of Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Clinton Naude.
“While most kiwis know what to do we know that practising these drills works, so it’s critical that people get involved. Whether you’re at home, school, at work or in the car – treat this drill like the real deal,” he says.
In the past 365 days there have been 26 earthquakes in Bay of Plenty.
More information on the national earthquake drill ShakeOut can be accessed at getready.govt.nz/shakeout. Bay of Plenty Civil Defence will be updating their Facebook page in the lead up to the drill and on the day.
