24 April 2019
Work to upgrade Lake Ōkareka boat ramp and jetties at Acacia Bay begins on Monday 29 April.
From Monday contractors will be preparing the site ready to revamp the launch facilities which includes incorporating the three current ramps into one that is three lanes wide and strengthened to meet the requirements of larger, more modern boats and trailers.
The existing jetty will be extended to help direct boats and improve safety for swimmers and a second jetty will be constructed on the opposite side of the ramp. The new facilities have also been designed to meet the needs of people with mobility issues.
It is expected that the upgrade work will take about four weeks, all going well.
While the work takes place contractors will endeavour to keep facilities open for launching however the nature of the work may result in limited public access and delays for boat users at times.
Alternative launching facilities are available at Lake Tikitapu and Lake Tarawera.
The upgrades to the facilities at Lake Ōkareka were announced last year following a major grant of $453,250 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
Council have worked alongside Lake Ōkareka Community Association, Tūhourangi, Te Arawa Lakes Trust and Rotorua Lakes Community Board on plans for the upgrade to ensure the enhancements meet the needs of the community.
Also involved in the planning were Fish and Game, the water ski club, Te Waiariki Purea Trust and Rotorua Duck Tours which is contributing financially to the project for specific requirements for their operation.
The tender process for the project concluded earlier this year and work was scheduled for after the Easter/ANZAC/school holiday period.
Further work to upgrade the toilet block at Acacia Bay is scheduled for the end of June.
