Pinkbike Share the Ride is back for 2019 giving Rotorua kids an opportunity to get on their bikes.
Share the Ride is a community initiative that encourages kids that might not otherwise have the means to do so, get on a bike and ride/ enjoy the forest.
It is sponsored by Pinkbike, Giant bikes and Mountain Bike Rotorua, Crankworx Rotorua and MultiDay Adventures.
The programme is split into two. This year Te Kura o te Koutu has been given opportunity to have guided rides using Mountain Bike Rotorua bikes throughout the week and groups ride daily.
In addition, 10 kids are selected from the community based on their backgrounds and social demographic/needs and are given a bike each at the event throughout the week, GIANT bikes provide the bikes.
Tak Mutu leads the sessions and says those selected to take part are very appreciative about being given this opportunity.
“It is very humbling and I think it will all become clear and exciting once Crankworx starts. They are super lovely families,” he says.
Those taking part get 4 weeks of learning bike maintenance and bike riding skills with professionals from the cycling industry, tuition and familiarization with the forest, trails and facilities available
“At the end of the program the nominated kids get a brand new bike and helmet thanks to MTB Rotorua, Giant, Pinkbike and Crankworx.”
Tak says this is a special project, which he loves being involved with.
“It’s the gift of giving and it’s amazing to enable families to get out there and enjoy the wonderful asset of the Whakarewarewa Forest.
“We’ve got great examples of families who have gone on to make mountain biking a regular part of their everyday lives. The perfect outcome.”
