With those New Year’s resolutions weighing on your mind February is full of events to get you out of the house and keeping fit.
Whether you’re into biking for transport or exploring off-road trails these events are designed to suit all abilities and fitness levels.
February is Bike Month
To celebrate the national Bike Month programme Sport Bay of Plenty, with the help of local sponsors, has organised 11 bike related events aimed at encouraging more people to give bike riding a go.
The events cover everything from bike maintenance and ladies-only rides to creative rides that test your artistic abilities.

Rotorua Lakes Council is a major sponsor of Bike Month and is hosting two events in the programme this year.
Frocks on Bikes – Summer Ramble
It wouldn’t be Bike Month without a Frocks on Bikes ride.
The Summer Ramble will take place on Sunday, 3 February from 10am. The theme is 1920s/Art Deco and concludes at the Blue Baths where riders can partake in a refreshing mocktail or swim, if they wish.
The Summer Ramble bike route is designed to be casual and will suit beginner riders.
The ride is a free event but registrations are required. All you need to bring along on the day is a bike, helmet and drink bottle.

Go by bike day
It’s free, it helps the environment, it improves your health and the best yet – no parking hassles. There are many benefits to riding a bike to get from A to B – that is what Go By Bike day is all about.
Rotorua Lakes Council will be hosting four commuter pit stops around the city on Tuesday 26 February (national Go by Bike Day) between the hours of 7am and 9am.
Each pit stop will include refreshments, spot prizes and riders will go into the draw to win 1 of 3, $100 vouchers to Cyclezone Rotorua.
Council’s CyWay team will also have a special pit stop in Jean Batten Square (outside Te Aka Mauri) with giveaways, fruit and the smoothie bike so commuters can finish off their ride with a liquid snack.
Please note that you must be riding a bike to take advantage of the pit stop goodies.
Pit stop locations:
- Corner of Lake Road and Railway Road
- Te Ngae Road – roadside near the Redwoods Centre
- Corner of Basley Road and Morey Street
- Old Taupo road (outside New World)
