Topic: NZ Stop Co-Governance Tour
Enquiry
I am writing up about how the NZ Stop Co-Governance tour is scheduled to come to Rotorua but its venue has pulled out. I had a couple of questions I was hoping someone could please help me with?
[Reporter also emailed Mayor’s office] to ask the mayor if she would like to comment on the topic and if she has a stance on its being here.
WIll add a couple links for some background too.
Reporter provided the following links to stories relating to previous stops on the tour:
Questions:
- Has any council-owned venue been approached to host this event?
- What has and what would any answer be?
- What examples are there of co-governance at council in Rotorua?
Any other comment?
Response
The following was provided by the organisation:
Has any council-owned venue been approached to host this event?
A booking enquiry has been made.
What has and what would any answer be?
As for any event, council would need to be satisfied about how the event would be adequately managed.
What examples are there of co-governance at council in Rotorua?

From Mayor Tapsell:
Reporter was advised that the Mayor would not be making any comment on the matter at this time.

Topic: Emergency housing
Enquiry
Getting in touch to request some comment from Mayor Tania?
It's in relation to the (attached) MHUD report into Rotorua's emergency housing.
I wanted to ask:
On p22 of the report there is mention of the unintended consequences of the motel use here for homeless people: ""this led to a number of unintended consequences, including an increase in crime and disruptive and intimidating behaviour in and around Fenton St, which the public directly attributed to the increase in emergency housing accommodation".
I wanted to ask is this, as far as Mayor Tania knows, the first admission from MHUD that the anti-social problems seen here were a direct result of motel use for emergency accommodation?
Response
Reporter was informed that yes, the Mayor believes it is.

Topic: Citizenship ceremony
Enquiry
Reporter following up on this week’s Citizenship Ceremony:
Would it be possible for me to use a few photos from the council Facebook page from the ceremony? If so, do I just credit them to Rotorua Lakes Council?
Also is it possible to either have a form of the programme sent through or have the couple bits of information below:
- How many people became new Kiwis at the ceremony yesterday? What countries were they from?
- Double checking it was Rotorua Primary School doing the welcoming items?
Response
We provided the candidates list which provides information about country of origin and provided images (to ensure better quality than those taken directly from Facebook would be).
We confirmed the tamariki who performed during the ceremony were from Rotorua Primary School.
