Topic: Asbestos in public/Council buildings

Enquiry

This question was asked in [today’s Operations & Monitoring Committee] meeting but wasn't quite directly answered -

How much has the council spent on issues relating to asbestos on the soundshell/lakefront redevelopment, the museum and SHMPAC?

And

How much more is it expected to cost (I understand there are contingency funds for asbestos related challenges)?

Response

The following information was provided:

SHMPAC: Approx. $60,000 has been spent on asbestos to date, mostly on sampling and testing. $850,000 has been budgeted for the project.

Museum: Approx. $290,000 has been spent to date. Most of this has been on asbestos in the ground in the basement. Final costs won’t be known until the foundations are dug and will depend on whether or not asbestos is discovered at different depths.

Asbestos related costs associated with the demolition of the Scout Hall, Kuirau Park and the Soundshell has been approx. $601,000. The vast majority of this was related to the Soundshell – an estimated $553k related to asbestos, including removal and ground remediation ($288k), asbestos assessment, monitoring and safety ($205k), and project management ($60k).

Topic: Night Market

Enquiry

We have seen your [Facebook] post about the Night Market tonight. Just checking...is this the first night it has returned since the first Covid lockdown in March?

Was hoping to get a small story up about it so any information about the market would be appreciated.

Are all the usual vendors returning?

Are there any restrictions in place?

Is it still over the two blocks ofTutanekai St?

Response

Is this the first night it has returned since the first Covid lockdown in March?

Since the first lockdown, we had Food Truck Thursday twice (28 May and 11 June). The full market also traded in the first level 2 period during August and the last market was 6 September.

Was hoping to get a small story up about it so any information about the market would be appreciated.

Are all the usual vendors returning?

Tonight’s market is at full capacity with regular vendors and a couple of new ones.

Are there any restrictions in place?

For tonight’s market we just ask that people follow the usual Covid 19 guidelines – stay home if sick, wash hands regularly, keep physically distanced from people you don’t know where possible, and use the Covid tracing app. There will be hand sanitiser and QR codes available at the market.

Is it still over the two blocks ofTutanekai St?

It will cover the full two blocks. We will also be operating the new canopy of lights for the first time.
