Becoming a New Zealand Citizen
Applications to become a New Zealand citizen must be made to the Department of Internal Affairs. You can find information on this process at their website or by phoning them on 0800 22 51 51.
The Department of Internal Affairs will communicate with you throughout your application process including when your official ceremony will be.
Rotorua Lakes Council hosts the formal ceremony in which you stand before the Mayor or Deputy Mayor and take the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance, declaring you will honour King Charles III, King of New Zealand, obey the laws of New Zealand and be a good citizen.
Where are the citizenship ceremonies held?
In the Council Chambers, Civic Centre, 1061 Haupapa Street.
Who can attend a citizenship ceremony?
Ceremonies are open to the public, but usually only the candidates and their family/friends attend.
How will I know when my ceremony is?
Internal affairs will send you an invitation to attend your ceremony at the Rotorua Lakes Council approximately three weeks before the event.
How many guests can I bring to my ceremony?
Usually two guests.

Is afternoon tea served at the Citizenship Ceremony?
Yes the Citizenship Ceremony is a catered event.
How long is the Citizenship Ceremony?
A ceremony can take up to 2 hours 1.30pm - 3.30pm
Is there an RSVP on the invitation?
Yes there will be a RSVP section on the letter sent to the applicant from the Department of Internal Affairs.
