Within the Rotorua Lakes area, the Department of Conservation has a number of sites available for camping.
Rerewhakaaitu, Brett Road, Guy Roe Reserve (Rotorua Lakes Council managed)
Campsite Location: Approx. 29km South East of Rotorua

Lake Okaro (Rotorua Lakes Council managed)
PLEASE NOTE - Lake Okaro campsite is closed for non self-contained camping. No toilet facilities are available at this site until further notice.
Campsite Location: Access from Waimangu Road
Facilities: BBQs, picnic tables, toilets, boat ramp, dogs permitted on leads, 1.8km walkway, wetland development

Boyes Beach(Rotorua Lakes Council managed)
Campsite Location: Head East out of Rotorua on SH 30. Take a right turn onto Tarawera Rd at the large roundabout then left onto Ōkareka Loop Rd. When you reach the settlement of Ōkareka turn left onto Miller Rd. The turn-off to the Ōkareka campsite is on the right where the seal ends. (Access to the campsite is sealed.)

Campsite Location: 21 km from Rotorua on Trout Pool road off SH 33, Okere Falls, New Zealand
Facilities: Vehicles with purpose built sleeping facilities (eg. motorhome, campervan, caravan, house bus etc), Public toilet

Campsite Location: Eastern shore of Lake Tarawera, approx. 20 km south-west of Kawerau
Facilities: Water from tap, Toilets, Picnic Table

Please visit the webpage for current costs. A permit (cost involved) is required for vehicle access Kawerau. Permits are available from the Kawerau Information Centre, Plunket Street, Kawerau. Phone +64 7 323 7550. Open Mon-Sun 8.00am - 4.00pm. Closed Christmas and Boxing Day, or you can access the Campsite by boat.

Campsite Location: 29 km south east of Rotorua. Turn off SH 5 into State Highway 38, then into Rerewhakaaitu Rd. Follow to Ash Pit Bay.
