Tarawera Sewerage Scheme

Welcome to Rotorua Lakes Council’s Tarawera Sewerage Scheme I Te Mauri o Tarawera webpage. Here you will find the latest updates about the scheme.

Lake Tarawera is a taonga tuku iho (ancestral taonga) for Tūhourangi and Ngāti Rangitihi, and a taonga of immense importance to Tarawera communities, Rotorua and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Allowing the declining water quality of our lakes is not an option acceptable for our communities. This means corrective actions are needed now to protect the lake to address many factors affecting the lake’s water quality. Wastewater reticulation is one of those actions and will reduce public health risks associated with poorly performing on-site treatment systems contributing towards restoring and maintaining the bathing water quality of the lake.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Rotorua Lakes Council are jointly committed to ensuring the Lake Tarawera community is served by modern wastewater management and a disposal system that best protects the health of the lake and our people into the future.

Please contact Gerhard Mostert, Engineers Representative, who will be more than willing to answer any questions about the Scheme – email:  or phone 07 348 4199. Three Monthly community updates will be issued to the Tarawera Community and also published here
