Rotorua Lakes Council received no weather-related calls overnight.
However, this morning we received six calls regarding fallen trees on Unsworth Rd, Hamurana Rd, Amohia St, Oturoa Rd, Elizabeth St and the corner of Sumner and Fenton St, as well as reports of surface flooding on Duncan St and the corners of Icarus and Pegasus Dr and Peace and Hilda St. These issues have been attended and sorted by council’s contractors.
Council staff are continuing to monitor the weather and forecasts, and are working together with Bay of Plenty Regional Council to keep an eye on local streams and rivers.
Contractors are carrying out the following checks throughout the day and have additional staff on standby if required:
- inspections of unsealed roads
- checking leaf and flood prone areas
- removing storm debris
- inspecting at-risk trees
There were no reported issues overnight with the drinking water, stormwater or wastewater, despite several power cuts at wastewater pump stations. This morning, a fallen tree did cause a power cut to the Keith Rd wastewater pump station resulting in a minor wastewater overflow. Council’s contractors responded and arranged a mobile generator for the site, the overflow was cleaned up and the pump station is now operational.
For anyone wanting a cold-plunge swim - It’s best to avoid swimming in rivers, streams, lakes, harbour areas and at beaches for at least 48 hours after heavy rain. There is likely to be contamination from rural and urban run-off in waterways after heavy rain.
