Thousands of locals and visitors have checked out the interactive light sculpture Affinity in Rotorua’s inner city since it was installed early this month.
The installation is now in its third and final week. Rotorua residents’ last chance to see it will be Sunday 23 April 2017.
“We are thrilled with the number of people who have visited Affinity, with well over 3000 coming through each week,” says Mandy Godo, Rotorua Lakes Council project manager.
Being hosted by local volunteer ambassadors from 6pm – 10pm each evening, Affinity is a large scale interactive light installation that mimics neurons in the brain and aims to increase awareness about dementia and its impact on those who have the disease and their families. Feedback from those who have visited Affinity include statements like:
“The lights lured us in and is such an awesome way to help understand more about dementia.”
“Affinity opens up the dementia conversation, but not in a heavy way”.
“I think it’s awesome – best thing I’ve seen in the City Focus for a long time.”
Affinity encourages participants to hear and share stories from those affected by dementia.
“The evening environment and beauty of the light display seems to create an atmosphere for sharing, with many people sharing their personal stories on how their lives have been impacted by family members with dementia,” says Mandy Godo.
“The sharing aspect has been extended and we’re encouraging participants to share their pictures of Affinity on social media with a photo competition using the hashtag AffinityRotorua.
“Pictures are a great way of capturing and sharing memories and given that dementia affects our memories, we think it’s a great way to connect the dots.
With less than a week to go, we hope as many locals as possible get to see and experience Affinity while it’s here in Rotorua. After us the installation heads to Columbia, South America.”
Affinity ends Sunday 23 April 2017. Submissions for the Facebook photo competition end 5pm Monday 24 April 2017.
To enter the competition simply share your pictures of Affinity on Facebook using the hashtag: #AffinityRotorua.
